Excerpt from the article

“Sunlight streams into Paris’ Galerie Brugier-Rigail through large-paneled windows, bouncing off curved metallic slates that hang from the ceiling in an installation designed by studio Atelier Tsuyoshi Tane. Titled, “TYPE-XIV Eugene Studio project,” the new exhibition will open Oct. 23 with designs from A-POC Able Issey Miyake presented alongside monochromatic prints from artist Eugene Kangawa’s series, “Light and shadow inside me.”

In one such work, a slightly-off centered turquoise rectangle blurs into the blank canvas of 07.21-08.23 in my house, 2021. Kangawa achieved this effect by painting a piece of paper solid green, folding it into a three-dimensional shape, and leaving it outside for weeks before finally unfolding it to reveal the marks left by the sunlight. Whereas other black-and-white prints were created in a partially similar manner before being exposed in a darkroom.

On view for three days, the exhibition underscores the humanistic design ethos of Issey Miyake’s visionary namesake and founder, who revolutionized fabric production and material exploration. Additionally, tools used to produce the garments on display and guided tours by Kangawa and Miyamae bring these processes to the forefront. In the same spirit, Kangawa’s work is alive and integrated with the world around it. Over the course of each day, prints will transform with the hour, as light turns to shadow, and shadow returns to light.”
