The White Painting series is featured in “The Reasons for The Keyword of Contemporary Jewelry: Simplification” by Mr. Akio Seki, Art Historian / Curator / Planning Section Chief of Tokyo Photographic Art Museum.

 

Some art works have extremely simple shapes. For example, the work of American painter Robert Lyman who died in February this year. The Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, where I once worked, houses his work of 1975 named Monarch.

When you see these works in front of your eyes, it is no wonder that the viewers are at a loss. But if you understand that the reason for the simplification is a message from the artist who wants viewers to see something that is not in form, you will feel very easy to accept.

In the 1960s when Lyman started this painting series, free jazz, in which free improvisation by multiple instruments intersects, has been actively pursued. A work using a white square canvas, similar to Lyman, is "White Painting" by THE EUGENE Studio (Eugene Kangawa). In this work, the writer invited an unspecified number of people to participate in the work, kissing a canvas in public space.

Probably, in this work, the reason why it must be a white canvas is that both the participant and the viewer face themselves and encourage their imagination. This work has many elements in common with contemporary jewelry, including the elements of contact and dialogue with the theme and work. …
