From November 10 through December 16, “#003 The Waiting room,” composed of furniture and items from THE EUGENE Studio’s collection, is being presented at Ginza Sony Park, which extends beneath Ginza. The space brings together pieces from the studio’s collection and furniture it has created, as well as objects and books. On November 9, a talk between Eugene Kangawa (THE EUGENE Studio) and the Representative Director of Sony Enterprise Co., Ltd. is also scheduled at Ginza Sony Park. We invite you to stop by.

“#003 The Waiting room” THE EUGENE Studio
The Sony Building, which closed in March 2017, was designed with inspiration from the structure of New York’s Guggenheim Museum, known for its extensive collection of modern and contemporary art. “#003 The Waiting room” is the first experimental program at Ginza Sony Park, which opened for a limited period on the former site of the Sony Building, to be developed together with a contemporary artist.

THE EUGENE Studio, an artist studio working primarily in contemporary art while extending conventional boundaries, has been invited to create a new space, “The Waiting Room,” within this public park. The space is composed of private elements—including furniture used and collected by the studio, rare objects, flowers, books, and fragments of works—as well as intervals, open spaces, and voids.
Ginza Sony Park is located on the former site of the Sony Building, once widely known as a gateway to Ginza and a popular meeting place, and is now beginning to serve as a place of respite within the district. “The Waiting Room” is an attempt to create an ambiguous space that unsettles boundaries by bringing together and transforming a range of opposing concepts: the urban and the personal, bustle and everyday life, the inorganic and the colorful.
Appearing within the extraordinary setting of an open, austere underground space in the city, it also reveals the vividly colored everyday life of THE EUGENE Studio, whose practice is often associated with a minimalist aesthetic. This living space also serves as a waiting area open to visitors. It can also be experienced as a presentation of THE EUGENE Studio’s practice.
We invite you to step into “#003 The Waiting room” and spend an interval in your day relaxing or passing the time in your own way—sitting in rare chairs that are not ordinarily available to the public, accompanied by a glass of water.
