「THE EUGENE Studio 1/2 Century later.」
A half century from 1968 proposed by the convinced.
With the theme “from destruction to regeneration” , THE EUGENE Studio is now holding an exhibition in the motif of the time between 1968 and today “1/2 Century later.” .
Koichiro OSAKA reviewed this exhibition, mainly about the mass scale installation.
Prague spring, the antiwar movement towards Vietnam War, the May Revolution in Paris, and the intensification of movements by student activists across the country including Tokyo University and Nihon University in Japan ___ the year 1968 was the year protests against the political system broke out around the world.
In his publication “ From Counterculture to Cyberculture ” , media historian Fred Turner analyzed how the repercussion of the counterculture demanding access to wisdom which was brought up by Stewart Brand in the 60s popularized web and effected products created in Silicon Valley and informatization of the society. What kind of future image should we aspire ? What kind of technological development is necessary to realize that society?
Such fundamental vision was questioned again in the potential of the feasibility by the development of technology, and brought a dramatic change. political innovation, technological development, and the vision towards future should be envisioned as a sequence and for instance that whole occurs in Sci-Fi s. Simultaneously, in a situation where individuals act for their own benefit while a certain sense of value of collaborative consumption is fermented, speculative design which seek out social implementation of their idea without disconnecting from reality, and artists activity as a social business implying practice of technological development are attracting attention.
