“Inspired by the artistic philosophy behind Light and shadow inside me, a work by contemporary artist Eugene Kangawa / Eugene Studio, A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE has developed a new project titled TYPE-XIV Eugene Studio project. The series was unveiled in Ginza, Tokyo, and Semba, Osaka, presenting an innovative textile collection that renders subtle gradations of light and shadow using only black-and-white yarns.
This exhibition is organized as a touring presentation following the project’s highly acclaimed debut in Paris. The spatial design is conceived by architect Tsuyoshi Tane, resulting in an exhibition that stands at the intersection of art and textile, where conceptual thought and material experimentation resonate closely.

The project began when Yoshiyuki Miyamae, designer at A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE, approached Kangawa after visiting the solo exhibition EUGENE STUDIO After the Rainbow held at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo in 2021.

’Rather than setting strict schedules, we moved forward through open-ended discussions,” Miyamae explains. “To create something truly new, it is essential to collaborate beyond the boundaries of one’s own organization. Becoming a team was the ideal form for this project. Our goal was not simply to produce a product, but to think through and experience together the ideas Kangawa has explored in his artistic practice.’

He continues: ‘Even for textile designers, it is rare to begin experimentation at the level of the internal structure of each individual thread. Through this experience, I believe the A-POC ABLE team has gained the ability to think and create from a much more microscopic perspective.’

Miyamae also notes the potential for further exploration of this approach through different colors and materials. In this exhibition, the moment when philosophy and technique align—when light and shadow are rendered through woven textiles—clearly comes into focus. Visitors are invited to experience firsthand this new trajectory born from the dialogue between the ideas of Eugene Studio and A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE.”
