The large-scale show—marking the maison’s 170th anniversary and the forthcoming Osaka–Kansai Expo—is currently on view at the Osaka Nakanoshima Museum of Art, with a special focus on the brand’s deep ties to Japan.
A contemporary artist known for large-scale site-specific installations, Kangawa toured the exhibition and spoke in the second room, “ORIGINS”:
“For my generation, the strongest images of Louis Vuitton are Nicolas Ghesquière and Virgil Abloh. Seeing this exhibition—especially the ‘ORIGINS’ room—I learned more about the history that began with trunk making. Very early on, when rounded lids were the norm, making the lid flat was a breakthrough: it enabled trunks to be stacked and space to be used efficiently. Previously lids had to be rounded for drainage, but with the invention of waterproof canvas, flat lids became possible. Combining advanced techniques to create new forms demanded by the times—that’s innovation. Canvas is also central in painting history, and imagining that moment is thrilling.”
Special Guest — Eugene Kangawa
Born in the United States in 1989. Known for works engaging light and history, he held the solo exhibition EUGENE STUDIO: New Sea at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo—the youngest artist to do so at the museum. Following its international reception, a permanent museum modeled on that exhibition is scheduled to open in Bali with the support of collectors across Asia.
