“Works created with the idea of ‘bringing the sea into the museum’s grand hall,’ pieces where gold leaf particles continuously fall from the sky and no moment is ever the same, or sculptures made in complete darkness, unseen even by the artist who created them...

 

In 2021, the exhibition ‘EUGENE STUDIO After the rainbow’ by artist Eugene Kangawa / THE EUGENE Studio, held at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, garnered much attention. Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the exhibition drew long lines of visitors daily, becoming a widely discussed topic.

 

The influence of this exhibition has spread to various regions, and plans are now underway in Bali, Indonesia, for a permanent museum centered around works showcased in the exhibition. We spoke with Mr. Kangawa about this museum project as well.

Walking through a space illuminated by natural light streaming in from windows and the ceiling, I was once again reminded of how THE EUGENE Studio’s works always maintain a close relationship with the surrounding space. This connection with the environment was a key element in captivating visitors during the aforementioned solo exhibition at the museum.

Lastly, we discussed ‘Diversing,’ a defining feature of Kangawa’s works.

‘A curator from Hong Kong once described my works with the term “Diversing,” a combination of “Diversity” and “Sing.” The moment I heard it, I felt it resonate deeply with the world within me,’ said Kangawa.”
