“THE EUGENE Studio 1/2 Century later.”
A half century from 1968 presented by THE EUGENE Studio “doing it on purpose”.

With the theme “from destruction to regeneration”, THE EUGENE Studio is now holding an exhibition named “1/2 Century later.” which represents the time between 1968 and today.
Koichiro OSAKA reviews mainly the mass scale installation from the exhibition.

Prague Spring, the antiwar movement towards Vietnam War, the May Revolution in Paris, and the intensification of movements all across Japan by activists including students of Tokyo University and Nihon University ___ 1968 was the year which protests against the political system broke out around the world.
Fred Turner, a media historian analyzed how the repercussion of the counterculture demanding an access to wisdom which was brought up by Stewart Brand in the 60s, popularized web and affected products created in Silicon Valley and informatization of the society. What kind of future should we picture to aspire? What kind of technological development is necessary to realize that society?
The fundamental visions were questioned again in terms of the feasibility generated by the development of technology, and a dramatic change was delivered. Political change, technological development, and the vision towards the future are supposed to be envisioned as a sequence which can be seen such as in Sci-Fi. At the same time, in the present time which individuals act for their own benefit while a certain value of collaborative consumption is fermented, speculative design to seek out social implementation of their idea without disconnecting from reality, and artists activity as a social business with technological development are attracting attention.
